About Us

South Wales Police Authority is the independent body responsible for overseeing the police force.

We have 19 Members, who represent the communities of South Wales, and act as the bridge between the public and the force.

We work with and for all communities across South Wales to make sure you get a first class policing service.

Our area covers the seven Local Authorities of:

Ten Councillors – one from each Local Authority, with an additional member from Cardiff, Rhondda Cynon Taf and Swansea, as the largest areas
Nine Independents – who are appointed following public advert.

The Police Authority and Force has set its joint vision as Keeping South Wales Safe.

South Wales is already a very safe place to live, with low crime figures. We will work together to maintain this and make it even safer.

The Authority’s main duties include:

Consulting with the local community
Setting the police precept element of local council tax and fix the overall budget
Decide the policing priorities for the year, in agreement with the force and the community
Appoint and, if necessary, dismiss the Chief Police Officers, including the Chief Constable.
